SEXUAL DISCRIMINATION, HARASSMENT, AND VIOLENCE:

INITIATIVES TO RAISE AWARENESS AND

ENHANCE PREVENTION

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has established the Minister’s Task Force on the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Patients and the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) to address concerns about the adequacy of the RHPA’s sexual abuse provisions and to support Premier Wynne’s initiatives to raise awareness of sexual abuse and harassment, enhance prevention of sexual discrimination, harassment and violence and improve support for victims.  To assist the Task Force to carry out its advisory work, the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO) provided a response to the Minister’s request to report on the current status and operations of the Patient Relations Program for preventing and dealing with sexual abuse of patients, clients and co-workers.  At the CDTO, our Patient Relations Program is designed to enhance the relationships of dental technologists with patients, clients and co-workers through education and guidelines for professional behaviour as well as ensure appropriate measures are in place to prevent sexual abuse and handle complaints.
