CDTO is pleased to share an exciting opportunity from the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators (CADTR). The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Pilot Program initiative is designed to assist individuals with substantial on-the-job experience in dental technology to gain formal recognition of their skills and knowledge, potentially advancing them toward professional registration.

The PLAR pathway acknowledges the competencies acquired through practical experience and informal learning, offering participants:

  • Waived application and credential fees for one PLAR attempt

  • Formal recognition of existing knowledge and experience

  • A personalized outcome report detailing strengths, areas for improvement, and recommended next steps

  • A certificate confirming participation and hours completed

  • Notification of eligibility to apply for the Dental Technology Entry-to-Practice Assessment (DTETPA)

Participation in the pilot may lead to eligibility for the DTETPA or help identify additional steps required for professional registration. However, participation alone does not guarantee certification or registration.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Fluency in English or French

  • Residency in Canada or meet immigration eligibility

  • Valid photo identification

  • At least a high school/secondary education or post-secondary education in a non-dental health program that meets Canadian standards

  • A minimum of five years (6,500 hours) of verifiable work experience in dental technology, with at least one year (1,300 hours) completed within the past 36 months

For a detailed overview of the eligibility criteria and application process, please visit the CADTR website: cadtr-acortd.com

We encourage RDTs to share this opportunity with colleagues, dental lab assistants, or other professionals who may benefit from this pathway to professional recognition.

By participating in the PLAR Pilot Program, experienced individuals can take significant steps toward formal recognition and advancement in the field of dental technology.
